Signs You Need A/C Repair

_

Before long, the temperature outside will be rising, and that means you’ll need your air conditioner running frequently. If you want to ensure that it’s up to the task of keeping your household cool all summer, you need to be diligent during the spring for any signs of an equipment issue. In many cases, an air conditioner problem will start out small, but the longer you wait to have it repaired, the more serious it will become. Not only will the impact on your unit’s performance get larger, but the eventual monetary cost of fixing it will increase as well. That’s why it’s so important to know the warning signs that a cooling system needs repairs.

Every air conditioner problem is different, and there’s no guarantee that you’ll observe all of these red flags when something goes wrong with your appliance. However, these are the most common symptoms to look for, and there’s a good chance you’ll see one or more of them if a mechanical failure is taking place.

  • Ineffective or inconsistent household cooling

  • Strange noises or odors
  • Short cycling
  • Unusually high household humidity level

Why Is Your Air Conditioner Leaking?

_

One of the most frustrating A/C problems you may run into is your cooling system suddenly leaking water. Whether it’s a steady drip, a heavy pour, or even just a small splash now and then, a leaking air conditioner can lead to water damage and/or mold growth in your home. Plus, it’s a clear sign that something within the appliance is damaged or malfunctioning, and you’ll want to get that taken care of as soon as you can to prevent the problem from worsening. Covered below are a handful of the most likely reasons that your A/C unit would be leaking water.

  • Clogged Drain Line – To dehumidify your home, your air conditioner has to regularly remove moisture from the air, and all of that water has to go somewhere. Typically, it flows through the condensate drain line, which leads out of your home and into the sewage system. Over time, though, that drain line can become clogged with dust and other small particles from the air, which leads to the moisture becoming backed up and flooding. If you have experience working with appliances, you can try using a long wire brush to clean the line, but otherwise, you should have professionals handle it.
  • Clogged or Dirty Air Filter – As you run your A/C unit, its air filter gradually becomes packed with more and more contaminant particles. Once it becomes overly dirty or clogged, the unit’s airflow becomes restricted, and that leads to the evaporator coils becoming frozen. Eventually, they’ll thaw, and that water is likely to overflow the appliance and spill into your home. For this reason, replacing the air filter is always a good place to start when troubleshooting a leaky air conditioner.
  • Damaged Drain Pan – The drain pan, which is located either under the evaporator coils or in the air handler, has the task of catching the cooling system’s condensation as it drips. From there, it exits through the drain line. However, these pans can break or become corroded, which can cause water to leak from the appliance. When this happens, you need to have the pan replaced or repaired as soon as possible.
  • Disconnected Drain Line – In some cases, an air conditioner’s condensate drain line will become disconnected, which will usually result in water pooling on the floor or leaking through the ceiling. This can happen due to improper installation or be caused accidentally during an unrelated repair or tune-up. When this occurs, a local professional must reattach the line securely.
