5 Signs Your Furnace Needs Repair Before Winter Hits

Fall in the Treasure Valley is a good time to think about heat. The days are still mild. Service schedules are lighter than in the middle of a cold snap. Best of all, you have time to fix small problems before they turn into a no-heat night.

Most furnaces give warning signs before they fail. You just need to know what to look for. Here are five signs your furnace needs a closer look this fall.

1. Strange Noises When the Furnace Runs

Every furnace makes some sound. A soft hum and the whoosh of air are normal. New or loud noises are not. Listen for these sounds when your heat kicks on:

  • Banging or booming: This can mean gas is building up before it lights.
  • Squealing: A worn belt or a motor bearing may need attention.
  • Rattling: A loose panel or part may be shaking inside.
  • Clicking that goes on and on: The igniter may be failing.

Do not ignore a noise that keeps getting louder. A small issue can damage other parts over time.

2. Weak Heat or Cold Spots

Does your furnace run, but some rooms stay cold? Is the air from your vents only lukewarm? These are common signs of trouble.

Weak heat has many causes. A dirty filter can choke airflow. Blocked or closed vents can starve a room. A blower motor may be wearing out. Leaky ducts can also send warm air into the attic or crawlspace.

Start with the easy fix. Check your air filter. A clogged filter is one of the most common causes of weak heat. Our guide to air filter replacement explains how often to change it. If a clean filter does not help, call a technician.

3. The Furnace Turns On and Off Too Often

A furnace should run in steady cycles. If yours starts and stops every few minutes, something is off. This is called short cycling.

Short cycling wears out parts fast. It can also raise your energy bill. An overheating furnace, a dirty flame sensor or a bad thermostat can all cause it. Sometimes the thermostat is the real problem. Read our tips on how to tell if your thermostat is malfunctioning.

4. A Yellow Flame or Signs of Carbon Monoxide

If you have a gas furnace, look at the burner flame. A healthy flame is blue. A yellow or orange flame can mean the fuel is not burning cleanly. That can lead to carbon monoxide.

Carbon monoxide has no color or smell. Watch for these warning signs at home:

  • Headaches, dizziness or nausea that ease when you leave
  • Soot or rust around the furnace
  • A carbon monoxide alarm that sounds

Make sure your home has working carbon monoxide alarms. Test them each fall. If an alarm sounds, leave the house and call 911.

If you smell gas, do not touch the furnace or any switches. Leave the house right away. Once you are outside, call 911 or your gas utility.

5. Rising Energy Bills With No Clear Reason

Your heating bill will go up in winter. That is normal. But a big jump compared with last year can point to a problem. A furnace that struggles has to run longer to heat your home.

Common causes include worn parts, a dirty system and poor airflow. Age plays a role too. An older furnace may keep running but lose efficiency each year. If repairs keep adding up, read our guide to furnace repair vs. furnace replacement.

What You Can Check Yourself

Some furnace checks are safe for any homeowner. Try these before you call:

  • Make sure the thermostat is set to heat and the batteries are fresh.
  • Replace a dirty air filter.
  • Open supply vents and clear furniture away from them.
  • Check that the furnace power switch is on. It often looks like a light switch near the unit.
  • Keep the area around the furnace clear of boxes and clutter.

Leave the rest to a pro. Do not open burner panels, work on gas parts or bypass safety switches. These jobs need a trained technician.

Why a Fall Tune-Up Helps

A yearly tune-up is one of the best ways to avoid a winter breakdown. During a furnace tune-up, a technician cleans and checks the key parts. They clean and adjust the burners and test the igniter. They also check the safety controls. Small problems get caught early, before they leave you in the cold.

Fall is the ideal time to book. Your system will be ready before the first hard freeze. You also avoid the rush that comes with the first cold week.
